The Airbus A322 concept—a proposed stretch of the A321—offers airlines more capacity and a competitive edge in the middle-of-the-market segment. Capable of carrying over 250 engers up to 5,000 nautical miles, it could bridge the gap between single-aisle and wide-body jets at a lower cost. Yet Airbus appears reluctant to proceed, due to engine limitations, regulatory hurdles, and internal fears of cannibalizing sales from its own A321XLR. With Boeing’s rumored 797 project looming, the A322 remains a potential trump card Airbus hasn’t yet played.
