Last week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it was in touch with the Iranian authorities over the missing Indians.
”Three missing Indian citizens freed by Tehran police,” the Iranian embassy said in a post on X.
”Local media in Iran say police have found and released three Indian men who had gone missing in Iran,” it said.
The three men had reportedly arrived in Iran and were on their way to Australia after they were promised new jobs by a travel agency. The trio were kidnapped on May 1 and was rescued from the southern Tehran town of Varamin.
According to media reports, the missing men who have now been located have been identified as Hushanpreet Singh from Sangrur, Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar, and Amritpal Singh from Hoshiarpur, all from Punjab.
An India Today report, citing the family of one of the men, stated that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom for their release. Hushanpreet’s mother, a resident of Sangrur, alleged that travel agents took money from the family with the promise of sending him to Australia, but instead routed him illegally to Iran via the "Dunki" route.
