Actor Zachary Levi is doubling down on his public call for “non-woke movies” by launching a $100 million film studio campus in Bastrop, Texas — one he says will foster “organic, human-made content” in an industry he believes is “crumbling,” Variety reported.
Levi’s Wyldwood Studios is set to span 75 acres that he bought along the Colorado River, east of Austin. The “Shazam!” and “Chuck” actor is trying to raise $40 million for the project, which will blend traditional production facilities with housing, amphitheaters and office space. Construction timelines for Wyldwood Studios have not yet been announced.
He’s positioning Wyldwood not just as a creative retreat but a response to what he sees as a broken system. Levi compared the project to the early days of United Artists, launched by Charlie Chaplin and others seeking creative independence.
It isn’t the only film studio coming to Bastrop; developer Alton Butler is planning his 546-acre, over de-annexed the land last year.
Political timing is also playing in Levi’s favor.
Texas recently approved $2.5 billion in media production incentives over the next decade, and President Donald Trump, whom Levi backed publicly last year, has floated plans to penalize film productions that go overseas with a 100 percent tariff. Levi has also praised vaccine-skeptic voices like Joe Rogan and Woody Harrelson, who have relocated to Texas in recent years.
Elon Musk operates a number of offices and facilities for his various enterprises in and around Bastrop, including an 11-acre Starlink factory and two warehouse-like buildings dubbed “Hyperloop Plaza,” one of which houses a content moderation team for his social media platform, X.
Levi told Variety he doesn’t intend to create explicitly right-wing content despite the conservative tone of his online persona.
“We’re not making ‘The Chosen,’” he said, referring to the Biblical show popular with American evangelicals that is filmed mostly near Dallas. He prefers “edgy, human” narratives more in line with HBO’s “The White Lotus,” he said.
Levi, his partner Maggie Keating and their newborn son plan to move to Texas this July. He said the project was shaped by his new role as a father. He plans to cap the studio’s production days at 8 to 10 hours and provide family housing.
