Erastus Edung: Basic Salary, Allowances and Other Perks New IEBC Chair Will Enjoy

After more than two years, the government has appointed a new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) team.

President nominated lawyer Erastus Edung Ethekon as the new chairperson of the commission.
National Assembly Justice Committee approved Ethekon's appointment to head six of the commission, including Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo and Aduoland Fahima Araphat Abdallah.
How much will Ethekon earn as IEBC chairperson?
Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) circular for the financial year 2023/24 indicates that the IEBC chairperson is entitled to a basic monthly salary of KSh 574,200.
According to the circular, the lawyer will also get a house allowance of KSh 200,000 plus a salary market adjustment of KSh 182,800.
This brings his total gross pay to KSh 957,000.

Other perks that Ethekon will get are:
- Sitting Allowance at the rate of KSh 40,000 per sitting up to a maximum of KSh. 320,000 per month
- Official Transport: State Officers in Full-Time Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices shall be provided with an official car of engine capacity not exceeding 3000c
- Medical Benefit: An annual medical cover shall be provided to the State officer, one spouse and up to four children below twenty-five years fully dependent on the State officer, including Inpatient (KSh 10 million), Outpatient (KSh 300,000), Maternity (KSh 150,000), Dental (KSh 75,000) and Optical (KSh. 75,000).
- Retirement Benefit: There shall be two options of retirement benefits for State Officers, pension or gratuity
- Car loan and mortgage of up KSh 10 million and KSh 40 million, respectively.
- Up to KSh 20,000 airtime per month
What other IEBC commissioner will earn
SRC states the basic salary of IEBC vice chairperson at KSh 475,511, house allowance of KSh 150,000, plus salary adjustment (KSh 167,008), bringing the total gross pay to 792,519,.
The member of the commission is entitled to KSh 475,511 basic salary, KSh 150,000 house allowance and KSh 167,008 market adjustment rate.
All the commission gets are other benefits, including transport and medical allowances.
How much was paid to Chebukati in retirement?
Ethekon will take over from the late Wafula Chebukati, who retired in January 2023.
Chebukati received a pension payment and a gratuity package, amounting to 31% of his basic pay.
The former IEBC chair pocketed over KSh 12.4 million in his retirement package.
