The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Central New York will take place from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 14 at Delta Lake State Park in Rome.

More than 63 teams are expected to take part in the rain-or-shine event.

The theme for this year’s event, which is sponsored by Upstate Cancer Center, is “Red, White & Blue … And Relay, too!”

The relay will kick off with local cancer survivors and caregivers leading the first lap around the track, which will be followed by a reception in their honor. At 8:30 p.m., the luminaria ceremony to those who died of cancer will take place.

The event will also include music from local performers and DJs, kids’ activities, a “colossal colon,” tours of the Upstate Cancer Center mobile mammography van, eight local food trucks, fundraisers and other special events, such as a Utica Blue Sox visit from 2 to 3 p.m.

The Central NY relay raised more than $210,000 for the cancer society last year; 53 teams from the Mohawk Valley, Madison County and the Syracuse area took part.

The money raised from events around the country funds research, education, advocacy for cancer patients and their families, and essential services to cancer patients.

Since Relay for Life began in 1985, events across the country have raised $6.9 billion.
