The Florida Gators have a player who’s been grabbing plenty of attention this college basketball season even though he hasn’t even stepped foot on the court.

Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-9 center and true freshman, holds the Guinness World Record for being the tallest teenager.

While many might be wondering why he hasn’t played, the decision to redshirt him came after extensive discussions between Rioux, his family, and the coaching staff. They all agreed it was best to focus on his development before starting the clock on his college career.

Florida head coach Todd Golden provided an update on Rioux’s situation on Saturday before his No. 1 seed Gators took on No. 3 seed Texas Tech Red Raiders in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.

Golden suggested it will be a "challenge" for Rioux to get in the rotation next season, but didn't rule out the possibility "down the road" if he keeps putting in the work.

"He obviously doesn't play for us this year," Golden said. "I think it's a challenge next year. But if he sticks with it down the road, I think he can become an impactful player."

Rioux, a three-star prospect (247Sports) from IMG Academy, is originally from Quebec, Canada.

He had limited options out of high school, with only three offers from Florida, Stetson, and Florida Atlantic.
