Bharat Rashtra Samithi Non-Resident Indian South Africa continues its annual winter blanket drive with Midrand SAPS

This year, BRS NRI donated over 80 blankets to the Midrand police, who played a pivotal role in ensuring these essentials reached the most needy centres in the area.

For several years, local non-profit organisation, Bharat Rashtra Samithi Non-Resident Indian (BRS NRI) South Africa has organised a winter blanket drive to individuals and care centres in need, and this year is no exception.

Through their partnership with the Midrand police, they ensured that the blankets reach those who are most distressed and in need within the community.

This year, BRS NRI donated over 80 blankets to the Midrand police. Under the leadership of Station Commander, Brigadier Molefe David Tsotsotso, the Midrand police, along with the Community Policing Forum (F) and other stakeholders, distributed the blankets to various centres in the area on May 30, including Safe Haven Recovery Centre, New Life Centre, and Yenzani Children’s Home, among others.

As BRS NRI celebrated its 25th anniversary, taking pride in continuing its tradition of community service. Aravind Prasad Chikoti, member of BRS NRI in charge of the charity initiative, stated: “We have been donating blankets for several years now, through the Midrand police. The police identify the most needy centres and then invite us to them in the distribution.

“We are very grateful to help the community. Given that it is winter, the children, and the centres, benefit greatly from these donations.”

Midrand F public relations officer Percy Ingle expressed: “We are pleased to announce that Midrand police, F Midrand, and Waterfall City Security Companies are not only focused on arresting individuals and fighting crime; they’re also committed to making a positive impact in the community through charitable programmes.”

He encouraged businesses in and around greater Midrand and Waterfall City to collaborate with law enforcement in making a difference in people’s lives. “We call upon all Midrand and Waterfall City residents to come forward and share how we can assist those who are particularly in need within our communities.”

On behalf of the Midrand police, Visual Policing (VisPol) head Colonel Dula Mokwena thanked BRS NRI for their donations. “BRS NRI, we truly appreciate your donation, which allows us to help these centres. They are always on our minds, and during this time of year, we know we need to the shelters. We appreciate the work you are doing to our children.”

Lieutenant Colonel Signoria Figlan, another representative of the Midrand police, added: “We are really grateful to be here and to give back to the community. It means a lot to us. May you continue your great work. You may not realise how far your efforts can reach in the lives of the children you are nurturing.”
