She grew up during the Great Depression, a global economic downturn, unemployment and poverty. Her parents operated a general store in country NSW.
In 1942, the family bought a house at Peakhurst, which remains in the family. During this time, Heather worked for the major department store, David Jones, where she stayed for six months before employment with the Public Service - Registrar Generals Department. She worked there for more than 40 years until her retirement.
Heather loved to travel and has been to many countries. In 1963, she married a returned airman, Jack McKinley, and they enjoyed many years together until his death.
Heather still lives independently at Peakhurst in her family's home. Although she does not have children, Heather has a large extended family with whom she loves spending time.
Heather attributes her longevity to good genes, not stressing, eating well and a small glass of whiskey before bed each night.
