Dylan Cease had the start the San Diego Padres needed him to have against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park, Tuesday. Cease held the Dodgers without a run and completed seven innings to help the Padres get an 11-1 win.

Cease flirted with danger throughout his start. He only allowed three hits, but walked five Los Angeles batters. Cease allowed three of his five walks in the top of the third inning and the Dodgers loaded the bases. With two outs, Cease got Teoscar Hernandez to strikeout.

The Padres started a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Fernando Tatis Jr. walked, and Luis Arraez hit a double to right field. Tatis Jr. was able to score from first base to put San Diego up, 1-0.

Manny Machado kept the inning going with a single to right-center field that allowed Arraez to score from second base, making the score 2-0. Jackson Merrill completed the scoring in the inning, driving in Machado with a triple into the right field corner to put the Padres up, 3-0.

Cease worked a scoreless fourth inning and the Padres added a run in their half to make the score, 4-0. The Dodgers looked to break through against Cease in the fifth inning. Shohei Ohtani hit a one-out single and Freddie Freeman reached on a single after a Mookie Betts fly out to put runners on the corners. Again, Cease came through with a strikeout of Hernandez to end the inning.

San Diego went on the attack again in the bottom of the fifth. Arraez doubled to start the inning and Machado singled to score Arraez and make the score, 5-0. That was the only run the Padres would score in the inning despite loading the bases with nobody out.

While Cease continued to dominate the Dodgers’ lineup, the Padres continued to score. Martin Maldonado led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to left to put San Diego ahead 6-0. Two singles and a groundout by Machado allowed another run to score, giving the a Padres a 7-0 lead.

The Padres completed the scoring in the frame with Xander Bogaerts hitting a two-run two-out single to centerfield that scored Arraez and Merrill and put San Diego in front, 9-0.

Cease completed his night with a scoreless seventh inning. He finished with no runs allowed on three hits with five walks and 11 strikeouts. David Morgan took over for Cease and surrendered a run, but completed two innings to allow the rest of the San Diego bullpen to have the night off.

The Padres did plate two additional runs in the bottom of the seventh. Machado hit a single off the left field wall off position player pitcher Enrique “Kike” Hernandez to score Maldonado and Arraez to make the score, 11-0.

Morgan allowed the Dodgers to score a run in the top of the eighth inning, but he finished his night with two innings pitched, allowing a run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Every San Diego starter recorded at least one hit, except Tyler Wade. Arraez, Machado and Bogaerts each had three hits in the game and Machado finished with five RBI.

The Padres will try to win the series against the Dodgers, Wednesday at 1:10 p.m.
