Joanna Coe allowed herself a tiny glass of wine to celebrate Monday night.
Earlier in the day, the 2007 Oakcrest High School graduate shot a 3-under par 68 on the Bay Course at Seaview, a Dolce Hotel, to win the Monday qualifier and grab one of the two final spots in this week’s ShopRite LPGA Classic. The 54-hole, $1.75 million Classic will be played Friday to Sunday at Seaview.
Coe also won the Monday qualifier at ShopRite 15 years ago as a 20-year-old amateur. She probably had a little more energy to celebrate back then and that’s completely understandable.

Coe, 35, and her husband, Ryan, had a baby girl, Jenny, born last June 14. Coe lives in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and is the Director of Instruction at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore.
“I’m sure that celebration was a lot different,” Coe said of her win in 2010. “Now, I have a baby and a lot of responsibilities. Honestly, I’m exhausted more often. I’ve got a lot going on, a lot of juggling. A tiny little glass of wine is good for me.”

What Coe did Monday was remarkable. In any professional sport, it’s rare that someone accomplishes something and then repeats the same feat 15 years later.
“At 20 years old, I was at my peak physically and practicing,” she said. “College golf (where) everything was taken care of for me. I was really at the tip-top of my ball striking and game.
“But I know so much more about the game now. I teach it every day. I just understand the game of golf so much more than I did 15 years ago. If I could take the physical attributes of the 20-year-old with the brain of the 35-year-old and the maturity and the experience then I would be a super player. But I’m happy where I am with my game considering I had a baby less than a year ago.”
The LPGA Tour is celebrating its 75th season in 2025.
The ShopRite LPGA Classic has been around for more than half of those 75 years.
Monday qualifiers in the LPGA are for non-exempt players and amateurs. Professionals earn exempt status, which grants them automatic ission into tournaments, based on their past performances.
Qualifiers can be mentally challenging. The course is mostly empty except for workers completing last-minute tasks to get ready for tournament week. The qualifying round is an afterthought except for the golfers involved.
Coe entered this week’s qualifier with little to no expectations. She is playing in the KPMG Women’s LPGA Championship, an LPGA major championship in Frisco, Texas, on June 22. Coe looked at the qualifier as a practice round for KPMG.
“I really had no expectations,” she said. “I still compete a bunch, but I barely practice.”
But Coe had a kind of home-court advantage. She grew up playing Seaview. Because of her familiarity with the course, she didn’t need a practice round. Her long-time friend and coach, Bruce Chelucci, caddied for her. She hit it straight and kept it out of the fescue.
“I know that place,” she said of Seaview. “Bruce was on the bag, so it was obviously a comfortable situation. I hit the ball extremely well. When you hit it well at Seaview, and you’re not in the fescue, you can shoot under par, so that’s what I did.
“When things are good with my game, I can still shoot some good scores.”
The 54-hole Classic is June 6-8 on the Bay Course at Seaview, a Dolce Hotel in Galloway Township. Classic organizers announce the 144-player field Thursday afternoon.
Monday was just the latest chapter in what has been a long and diverse successful golf life for Coe.
After graduating from Oakcrest, she excelled at Rollins University in Florida, winning the Division II national championship in 2008.
Coe made her professional debut at the 2011 Classic, one year after she qualified at the same tournament as an amateur. She has played in seven major championships, and on the LPGA’s developmental circuit — now known as the Epsom Tour — from 2012-15
Coe then shifted into becoming more of a teaching professional. She began to work at Merion in March of 2022. Merion has hosted five U.S. Opens and is one of the nation’s most historic golf venues. It’s the equivalent of someone in baseball working at Fenway Park in Boston or Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Coe recently branched into the media. Coe worked as an on-the-course reporter for ESPN during the men’s PGA Championship in May.
Now, she can add this week to those successes.
A Mays Landing native, Coe grew up dreaming of playing in the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
Fifteen years ago, she fulfilled that dream. This week she gets to live it again but in a different way.
“It feels like deja vu,” Coe said. “But I’m a more mature person and player. I have different priorities. Golf is not everything to me anymore. I’m really happy in my life. I have a wonderful husband and baby, and a job that is super fulfilling and incredible. I’m super happy in my life.”
