
Current Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant is emerging as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve (Fed), the U.S. central bank.
Bloomberg quoted a source as saying on the 10th (local time) that inside and outside the Trump istration, Secretary Bessant is being pushed as the next Fed chairman.
As Secretary Bessant has led key economic policies of the Trump istration, including trade negotiations, tax cuts, and deregulation, he is also the right person to manage financial and capital markets in accordance with Trump's philosophy.
President Trump said on the 6th that he would nominate a successor to Fed Chairman Jerome Powell "very soon." Powell's term, guaranteed by law, is until May next year.
"I have the best job in Washington," Bessant said of his hippopotamus, adding, "The president will decide who is best for the American economy and the people."
Traditionally, Treasury ministers play an important role in the selection of Fed chair candidates and the interview process, Bloomberg reported, and it has not been decided whether Bessant will exclude him from the process of selecting the next Fed chair.
Steve Bannon, who served as Trump's artisan, said, "Bessant has proven that he can carry out President Trump's pledges during the first six months of his highly turbulent (Trump's inauguration), and he is a person who can safely entrust the global capital market as well as the style of the cabinet."
In addition to Bessant, former Fed board member Kevin Wash is also one of the candidates. President Trump said of Wash on the 6th, "He is very highly regarded."
Other candidates include White House National Economic Commission Chairman Kevin Hashitt, Fed Director Christopher Waller, and former World Bank President David Malfast.
